Dear CJC members and friends,

Israelis woke up this morning to the gut-wrenching news that the remains of Shiri Bibas, which were presumably returned by Hamas on Thursday with the bodies of her two children, were not in fact her remains. The shock, sadness and anger in response to this news is overwhelming and calls into question the next swap, set for tomorrow, and the ceasefire which was to be extended when the current phase expires in early March. Israel estimates that sixty-six hostages remain in captivity, roughly half of whom are still believed to be alive.

I hate to begin a Shabbat message with such horrific news, but at the same time, I believe that looking away is not helpful in the long run. I know quite a few people who are “taking a break” from the news these days for the sake of their mental health, but there’s also a downside to that. I believe we need to open our hearts, not close them, even if it means they might be broken.
